Worthington Welsh Collection
The Worthington Welsh Collection (“WWC”) of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (“CLP”) is one of CLP’s special collections. It contains books about Wales and the Welsh. The core of the collection is comprised of books from the private library of John Worthington (1848-1918). The books were contributed to CLP in 1948 by his two grandchildren. In a 1948 article in Carnegie Magazine the then librarian of the CLP’s Pennsylvania Room stated that “…his [Mr. Worthington’s] Welsh library is the finest one known….”
John Worthington was born in South Wales in 1848. He came to the United States with his parents in 1852 and settled in Pittsburgh in 1885. He was a mining and petroleum engineer in early oil development in the United States and abroad. Commencing in 1889, he was directly connected with the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey.
The WWC currently includes 157 titles and 290 volumes. The list, which sets forth the name, publication information and CLP Catalog Listing of each title, is accessible here. The WWC is located with other special collections in the Oliver Room on the third floor of the Main Library in Oakland, Pittsburgh. Books and other materials in the CLP’s special collections are available for review in the Oliver Room by appointment (412-622-1932).
Because of their age and historical significance, many of the books in the WWC are accessible online as electronic books for individual use via websites which have been established for this purpose. One such site is the Hathi Trust Digital Library. Information about this site is available here, and information about the restrictions on access and use of books accessible on the site is available here.
